Description
The Chieftain 3-Way Tipping Rail Trailer is a specialist rail engineering solution developed for the efficient transport, distribution and placement of ballast and other bulk materials during track construction, renewal and maintenance operations.
At the heart of the design is a 5m x 2.5m three-way tipping body capable of tipping to the rear, left or right. This gives rail contractors greater flexibility than a conventional rear-tip trailer, allowing material to be discharged to either side of the track or directly behind the trailer according to the requirements of the job.
The tipping body is mounted through four locking ball joints and operated by a single hydraulic tipping cylinder. Hydraulic doors are fitted to both sides and the rear, allowing the discharge point to be selected and controlled to suit the operation. As standard, the tipping ram and hydraulic doors are powered directly from the towing vehicle, providing a simple and dependable hydraulic system.
This three-way tipping capability makes the trailer particularly effective for ballast laying and track renewal, giving operators greater control over where material is discharged and allowing ballast to be positioned efficiently along the track. The design is equally suited to individual trailer operation or use as part of a multi-trailer ballast train, providing a highly productive solution for larger rail infrastructure projects.
Engineered for demanding rail environments, the trailer incorporates two 8-stud full-beam axles, multi-leaf spring suspension and dual-line air brakes, with parking-brake indicators visible from both ends. Four 550mm diameter P1-profile steel rail wheels and rail scrapers provide dependable on-track running, while 40mm couplings at the front and rear allow trailers to be connected and operated in sequence where required.
A comprehensive electrical system includes 12-volt lighting, automatic directional LED lamps, twin solar panels and an onboard battery. Practical features include recessed floor lashing points, forklift sockets, a lockable stainless-steel toolbox, wheel-nut indicators and clearly positioned safety and operational transfers.
Built for long-term performance in harsh rail conditions, each trailer is shot-blasted before being finished in a durable two-pack primer and paint system, delivering a high-quality finish with long-lasting resistance to corrosion.
Approved for RIS 1530 in the UK and I-PLM-5001 in Ireland, the Chieftain 3-Way Tipping Rail Trailer combines specialist rail engineering with a highly versatile ballast-handling system. With the ability to transport, position and discharge ballast to the rear, left or right, it provides rail contractors with a practical and efficient solution designed to improve material handling, reduce unnecessary machine movements and support faster, more productive track works.
