5 Metre Rail Trailer

The Chieftain 5m Platform Rail trailer is a highly versatile rail transport trailer designed to move machinery, equipment, materials and ballast efficiently to and around railway worksites. Built around a generous 5m x 2.5m platform, the flat deck design provides the flexibility required for a wide range of rail maintenance, renewal and construction operations.

Machinery and equipment can be transported securely on the platform, while optional galvanised clip-on ramps provide a practical solution for loading suitable wheeled or tracked equipment. Load security is an integral part of the design, with four pairs of recessed lashing rings within the side chimes together and four additional recessed in the floor. The recessed lashing rings provide multiple restraint positions while ensuring an unobstructed platform. A durable steel chequered-plate floor provides a robust working surface suited to the demanding conditions encountered in rail environments.

The trailer can also be quickly configured for ballast and bulk-material transport. Four integrated twistlocks allow either a 600mm or 1000mm high ballast box to be securely mounted to the platform, transforming the trailer from an equipment carrier into an effective ballast transport solution. This versatility allows one trailer to support different stages of a rail project rather than requiring dedicated equipment for every operation.

40mm couplings at both the front and rear allow multiple trailers to be connected together in sequence, forming a continuous rail consist for moving equipment and materials along the railway. A fabricated towing drawbar with 1560mm eye centres is fitted as standard, with alternative drawbar configurations available to suit different operating requirements.

The running gear is engineered for reliable performance on rail, incorporating two 8-stud full-beam axles, multi-leaf spring suspension and dual-line air braking, with parking-brake indicators positioned at both ends of the trailer. Four 550mm diameter P1-profile steel rail wheels are fitted as standard, together with rail scrapers positioned ahead of each wheel. Optional 650mm S1002-profile rail wheels and combined air and hydraulic braking are also available.

Practicality has been considered throughout the entire design with features such as wheel slots in the platform allowing trailers to be safely stacked, helping reduce the space required for transport and storage of multiple units. Forklift sockets beneath the trailer provide another convenient method of handling, while optional manual jack legs, a central lifting point, removable posts and fall-arrest provision allow the trailer to be further configured around individual operating requirements.

The electrical system includes 12-volt lighting, automatic directional LED lights at the front and rear, an onboard battery and twin 12-volt solar panels. A lockable stainless-steel toolbox with a rubber-sealed door provides secure equipment storage, while access steps, wheel-nut indicators and clearly positioned safety and operational transfers support day-to-day use.

Every Chieftain rail trailer is shot-blasted prior to finish, in a high-quality two-pack primer and paint system, providing durable corrosion protection and a finish designed to withstand prolonged use in harsh rail environments.
